Students will be exploring the importance of Pi day with this activity. Before starting this activity, have a class discussion about Pi day. Include the number for pi, the definition of the diameter and radius of a circle, and the area and circumference formulas they should use for the activity.
Step 1: Give each student an oatmeal pie! YUM! Don't let them eat it yet.
Step 2: Have students use a string or bendy ruler to measure the circumference of their oatmeal pie.
Step 3: Have students use the formulas to find the area and circumference of their oatmeal pies by measuring the diameter and/or radius and plugging them into the formulas.
Step 4: Have a class discussion on the connection between what the students discovered from step 2 and step 3.
Step 5: Let the students eat their oatmeal pies!!! :)
I have never used a worksheet when doing this activity. However, I found a free worksheet on teachers pay teachers that you could use with this activity!

ReplyDeleteOatmeal Pies are one of my favorite treats! I'm sure your kids loved this activity. This also a great way to introduce the topic of Pi with them. I love how you also give them a chance to collaborate with one another and make connections through their findings. I'm sure the students also had such a better understanding of the concept after using something tactile!
