Oatmeal Pi Day Activity

Students will be exploring the importance of Pi day with this activity. Before starting this activity, have a class discussion about Pi day. Include the number for pi, the definition of the diameter and radius of a circle, and the area and circumference formulas they should use for the activity.

Step 1: Give each student an oatmeal pie! YUM! Don't let them eat it yet.

Step 2: Have students use a string or bendy ruler to measure the circumference of their oatmeal pie.

Step 3: Have students use the formulas to find the area and circumference of their oatmeal pies by measuring the diameter and/or radius and plugging them into the formulas.

Step 4: Have a class discussion on the connection between what the students discovered from step 2 and step 3.

Step 5: Let the students eat their oatmeal pies!!! :)

I have never used a worksheet when doing this activity. However, I found a free worksheet on teachers pay teachers that you could use with this activity!

  2. Oatmeal Pies are one of my favorite treats! I'm sure your kids loved this activity. This also a great way to introduce the topic of Pi with them. I love how you also give them a chance to collaborate with one another and make connections through their findings. I'm sure the students also had such a better understanding of the concept after using something tactile!
